What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the words “artificial intelligence”? If you’re a millennial, it’s most likely either SkyNet from the iconic and extremely popular “Terminator” movie or Andrew from “Bicentennial Man”. Younger audience, especially Marvel fans, will probably think of Ultron, a super-intelligent robotic villain from the recent “Avengers” movie. One thing all of these characters have in common is human resemblance. That we know for sure. But where did Artificial Intelligence come from? Who created it? Is it really all about robots and unsuccessful attempts to conquer the world? We’ll start with brief Artificial Intelligence definition and then see if it’s as they describe it.

The origin of the term

In short, Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human thinking by machines. Term term itself was first mentioned in the paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”, written by Alan Turing, an English computer scientist and mathematician, in 1950. He’s most famous for creating the test, allowing for a rather simple way to determine whether a machine can really exhibit any signs of intelligence. The procedure involves three participants (an evaluator, another human, and a machine) visually separated from each other. Using a text chat, the expert needs to determine which one of the participants is a machine. If they’re unable to tell the difference between a real human and a machine, the latter one is supposed to have passed the test.

Strong AI

Simply put, the goal of Strong AI is to develop artificial intelligence to such an extent when AI becomes intellectually equal to a human. Many researches are sure that such systems will be able not only think but also explain how we, human beings, think as well. However, according to the experts’ opinions, we’ll be able to create such computational systems only by 2030 or even 2045.

Weak AI

This kind of AI is quite good at performing specific tasks. Usually, it’s either handling large data sets or something that involves repeating certain actions. The best examples of Weak AI application are intelligent personal assistants: Siri, Cortana, Alexa, Bixby, etc. They are extremely good at analyzing user’s voice and interpreting their speech into commands. But that’s as far as Weak AI can get. In simple words, Weak AI is a program that is capable to perform only one single task.

Wrap-up

Back in 1950s, when computers used to look like flat-sized boxes and were as expensive as private jets, nobody was really interested in AI from a practical viewpoint. But as technologies evolved, people started to take Artificial Intelligence more seriously. Today, it’s one of the most discussed topics both in the business and scientific communities. In fact, the market of AI is expected to be worth $16 bln. by 2022. Obviously, it’s impossible to put all aspects of such multifaceted technology as AI into one short article. There is just too much interesting stuff to tell about. That’s why we’ve prepared a series of articles aimed to cover all ins and outs of Artificial Intelligence.
